The idea was proposed by Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman at Tuesday's City Council meeting. Wichterman admitted to being annoyed by smoke when he goes to the beach.
"The wind blows it in your face. You've always got to move because of smoking," Wichterman said.
He gained an ally in Councilwoman Deanna Fiocca, who said she is bothered by cigarette butts in the sand. Fiocca noted TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, on Tuesday named the city's beaches the second best in the nation behind Myrtle Beach, S.C. and the ninth best in the world.
"TripAdvisor said Cape May beaches are ranked ninth best in the world. Making some beaches no smoking can only better our beaches," Fiocca said.
