Four killed in Middletown fire : Cigarette blamed in six-alarm blaze

Prosecutors say a cigarette is to blame for a six-alarm house fire on Statesir Place that left four people dead early this morning.

First Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said the blaze, first reported by a 911 call from a neighbor at 3:03 a.m., was caused by "improper use or disposal of a cigarette."

"It appears to have originated in a metal wastebasket in a spare bedroom on the first floor,'' he said.

Gramiccioni identified the victims as: Sheridan "Sheri" Banovich, 63; her daughter, Deidre Banovich, 23; her boyfriend, Anthony Cadalzo, 25, who had been staying at the home for about six months, and Denise Dusold, 60, Sheri Banovich's sister. http://bit.ly/i8v9Q5
